John's most recent article aboutthe Mexico elections is on the websiteCounterpunch.org. He joins us on the line from MexicoCity.
Was the Mexican Election Stolen?
AMY GOODMAN: Finally, John Ross, the role of U.S.companies in this election. You wrote an article in2005, for example, about Wal-Mart.
JOHN ROSS: Well, Wal-Mart, Halliburton -- how aboutthat? -- Kraft, a whole list of U.S. transnationals inthis election are part of what is called a Council ofCommunication that indeed were the people thatsponsored the spots, the hit spots against LopezObrador over many months. And it was a clearintermission in the Mexican election by transnationalcorporations.
AMY GOODMAN: Were these spots that had, for example,Hugo Chavez, Castro and Lopez Obrador together?
JOHN ROSS: Subcomandante Marcos, Hugo Chavez. We hadspots of the city falling down. You know, they werescare spots and they always wound up with a big redletters imprinted on the screen that said that LopezObrador was a danger to Mexico. And it's been clearfrom the beginning that the U.S. corporations backedFelipe Calderon, that Calderon has promised in fact toprivatize Pemex, the national oil monopoly.Halliburton is here, and they definitely want a pieceof that.
A lot of U.S. corporations want a bigger piece of whatused to belong to the Mexican people, what used tobelong to the Mexican state. And so, they are sidingwith Calderon, and their actual financing of thecampaign was very obvious. Dick Morris, famous DickMorris, rightwing Fox commentator designed a lot ofthose hit spots. And it was clear that the White House and the StateDepartment were very quick to recognize Calderon inthe first days after the election. George Bush calledCalderon from Air Force One. We again yesterday hadthe State Department reiterate that support ofCalderon. And they clearly from the beginning, theambassador, Tony Garza, here has made statements thatwere definitely in support of a Felipe Calderonpresidency. They have got that now. And let's see whatthey can do with it, because for the next six years,it's going to be very difficult for Felipe Calderon torun this country.
